Web Design Jobs

The great thing about web design is that virtually every business, organization, public figure, celebrity, and non-profit needs a website.  Web designers are involved in the artistic and technical aspects of creating websites and blogs based on your clients’ desired goals, as well as juggling the aesthetic appeal and the technical coding that makes a website optimized for search engines.

Web Design Job Titles

When job hunting online, keep in mind that web designers can be called different titles.  Another title is web developers, which relates to creating new content and pages on a website.  Webmasters are responsible for web design and regular site maintenance.

Freelance Web Design

In addition to seeking employment opportunities in web design, there are many freelance web designers who work for themselves.  While freelance work requires building a strong network of local contacts from networking and similar organizations, freelance web designers benefit from additional earning potential, flexibility, and freedom.  Freelance web designers are often paid a lump sum for creating a small website, rather than an hourly rate.

Critical Web Design Skills

Earning a degree in a computer related program such as computer science, computer programming or even graphic design will give you important credentials to increase your credibility in the marketplace. Regardless what educational path you choose, ensure you become fluent in programming languages such as HTML, Java, Flash, PHP, and XML, among others.  Each programming language you are capable of will improve your employment opportunities.

Important skills for web designers include:

  • Multi-tasking.  As a web designer, you will often work on several projects at once.
  • Work under deadlines and time constraints.  It is important to deliver your work within the specific time frame that the customer sets out.
  • Attention to detail, color, line, and design.  Web design has a very artistic edge to it and requires artistic abilities with proficiency in color, line, and design.
